Background lore
The story takes place in the southern regions of the Sword Coast, near the city-states of Baldur's Gate and Elturel.
Elturel and The Companion
- Elturel is also called the Kingdom of Two Suns, because there is a second sun perpetually shining above the city
- This second sun, called The Companion, appeared over Elturel 50 years ago.
- During that time the city was in great peril: it turned out that the leader of Elturel is secretly a vampire lord, and wants to add Elturel to his kingdom of undead.
- In this desperate hour a young acolyte names Thavius Kreeg prayed to the God Lathander, and his prayers were answered. Lathander gave The Companion to the city, whose light no undead could endure.
- The people of Elturel elected Thavius Kreeg to be High Overseer (i.e. mayor) of the city, for helping them in their hour of need.
Hellriders
- About 200 years ago, the knightly order operating in Elturel lead a holy crusade into Hell, led by an angel named Zariel.
- The crusade was a success, and the returning knights renamed their order to Hellriders, commemorating their victory.
- The order has served as the main military force for the city state of Elturel ever since.
- The Order is led by Gideon Lightward, presumed lost during the destruction of Elturel.
The Flaming Fist
- The Flaming Fist are a mercenary company, who serve as the de-facto police and military of the city-state of Baldur's Gate.
- The leader of the Flaming Fist is Grand Master Ultan Ravengard. He was on a diplomatic mission in Elturel during the time of the towns destruction, and thus is presumed killed.
Strange happenings in Elturel (before the cataclysm)
- Crime lords of the city seem to have vanished recently.
- An order has been put forward to assassinate a high-ranking official in Elturel.
The job was taken up by Calderis (aka The Dagger). She was to kill a VIP traveling from Elturel to Baldur's Gate the night before the cataclysm. After killing the target, she was to take their shield and deliver it to her client.
The assassination attempt failed, and the target has fled. - Upon returning to their hideout after the failed assassination attempt, Calderis's gang were wiped out by their clients: some cultists from Baldur's Gate.
Calderis was rescued by the PCs. She had overheard the cultists say that 'when the refugees start arriving from Elturel, they will look for targets among them'.
